Edufu Moodle Theme Documentation

Overview

Edufu is an education and LMS theme built on Moodle’s Boost theme. It provides custom page layouts, course and blog presentation, configurable header and footer content, social links, colours, typography, and dashboard styling.

What is in the box?

Edufu Moodle 5.2 package

Your download contains the Edufu theme package and this online documentation. Install the theme ZIP through Moodle’s plugin installer or extract it to the Moodle theme directory. If your download also contains a separate companion block ZIP, install it as a Moodle block after the theme.

Requirements

Platform

  • Moodle 5.2 or later
  • PHP version supported by your Moodle release
  • Access to Site administration as an administrator

Server capacity

  • Allow at least 200 MB for Moodle code plus course files.
  • Use production-grade CPU, RAM, and storage sized for your users and concurrent activity.
  • For larger sites, separate the web and database services where appropriate.

Review the official Moodle release information and your release’s installation requirements before deployment.

Install Edufu

  1. Download the Edufu theme ZIP from your purchase downloads.
  2. Sign in to Moodle as an administrator and go to Site administration → Plugins → Install plugins.
  3. Upload the theme ZIP, then follow the on-screen validation and installation steps.
  4. When installation finishes, go to Site administration → Appearance → Themes → Theme selector.
  5. Select Edufu for the device types where you want it active, then clear Moodle caches.

Alternatively, extract the package to theme/edufu in your Moodle installation, then visit /admin/index.php as an administrator to complete the upgrade.

Install the theme custom blocks

Only follow these steps when a separate Edufu companion-block ZIP is included in your purchase download.

  1. Extract the block ZIP and confirm it contains a Moodle block folder.
  2. Upload the extracted folder to your Moodle installation’s blocks/ directory using your hosting file manager, SFTP, or deployment process.
  3. Visit /admin/index.php as an administrator to complete installation, then purge Moodle caches.
  4. Add the block from a page’s Block drawer → Add a block menu if the block requires placement.

Update Edufu

  1. Back up the database, moodledata, and the current theme/edufu directory.
  2. Enable maintenance mode and replace the existing Edufu files with the new package. Do not overwrite your Moodle core files.
  3. Visit /admin/index.php to run the Moodle upgrade, or use the plugin installer if it accepts the update ZIP.
  4. Go to Site administration → Development → Purge caches, then check the site on desktop and mobile.
ImportantTheme configuration is stored in Moodle’s database. Keep a note of any custom SCSS, uploaded logos, or custom assets and verify them after every update.

Theme settings

Open Site administration → Appearance → Themes → Edufu. The following tabs correspond to the current theme settings.

General

Site-wide appearance and visibility options.

  • Favicon — upload the browser tab icon.
  • Back to top — show or hide the return-to-top button.
  • Global banner — show or hide the global banner.
  • Hide page banner / page bottom content — enter one page URL per line to exclude those elements on selected pages.

Logo

Upload separate images for desktop, mobile, and the footer.

  • Header logo — configure visibility, main image, and numeric width and height.
  • Mobile logo — configure a mobile-specific image and numeric width and height.
  • Footer logo — configure visibility, image, and numeric width and height.

Header and page banner

Control the promotional message, search, actions, and internal-page banner.

  • Top header content and URL — set the announcement text and its link.
  • Header variation, search, and placeholder — choose the header option and search behaviour.
  • Guest and logged-in buttons — set each label and URL; leave the guest URL blank to use Moodle’s default login page.
  • Page banner background — upload the background used for page banners.

Social

Set the social profile links displayed by the theme.

  • Link target — open links in the current page or a new window.
  • Profile URLs — Facebook, X, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, GitHub, WhatsApp, Telegram, and additional supported services.

Courses and blog

Configure labels and display behaviour for course cards and blog pages.

  • Courses — guest curriculum visibility; enrol button; free-course price; students, teacher, and currency labels.
  • Blog — one, two, three, or four-column layout; read-time text; search text; recent-posts title and limit.

Footer

Build a branded footer and optional newsletter area.

  • Background and top area — upload a footer background and set the introduction text.
  • Newsletter — add a Mailchimp embedded-form action URL, title, copy, placeholder, and button label.
  • Footer columns — configure titles and HTML content for up to five columns, plus copyright text.

Styling, typography, and advanced

Use these options for controlled visual customisation.

  • Styling — select or upload a Boost SCSS preset; set brand, secondary, tertiary, and dashboard colours.
  • Typography — add a Google Fonts URL and specify body, paragraph, heading, and heading-weight font values.
  • Advanced — add SCSS before or after the generated stylesheet. Keep changes minimal and test them after Moodle upgrades.

Translations

Translate Moodle interface text

  1. Go to Site administration → Language → Language packs and install the required language.
  2. Open Language customization, select the language, and choose Open language pack for editing.
  3. Search the strings, add the translated values, and save.

Translate Edufu strings

Theme language strings are in theme/edufu/lang/en/theme_edufu.php. Do not edit the distributed English file directly; use Moodle language customisation or provide a maintained language-pack override.

For multilingual page content, enable Moodle’s Multi-language content filter and enter content using the supported language tags.

Paid courses

Edufu controls presentation; enrolment and payment are configured by Moodle plugins. Use Moodle’s enrolment methods to connect your preferred payment workflow.

Demo content

Some visual demo content may be included with the theme, but complete demo data is not included. The package does not install demo courses, site-wide Moodle settings, enrolment methods, users, or third-party plugins.

Server recommendations
